Grand SLLI ‘Colours Night’ Rekindles Hopes for More & More Quality Army Sportsmen

Sri Lanka Army’s mother of all Regiments, Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), which boasts an unblemished record of gallantry and bravery, had his troops recognized Tuesday (12) evening during a mammoth and impressive spectacle staged at the Defence Services College auditorium to award ‘Colours’ to hundreds of SLLI family members.

Of those 153 SLLI recipients of ‘Colours’ during the glittering ‘Colours Night’ ceremony, headed by Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the SLLI Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Amal Karunasekara, a total of 80 sportsmen were chosen eligible to receive most recognized ‘Army Colours’ in the same event.

The two-minute silence, as has been the practice in all military ceremonies, revered the memories of fallen SLLI War Heroes, who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the country. The SLLI, Regimental song afterwards, reverberated saluting the esprit de corps of the Regiment and its unfailing glory at many fronts.

Afterwards, amidst patriotic melodies, Corporal R.M.K.K.R Weerasinghe, Best Disabled Sportsman as well as Lance Corporal E.A.N Dilshan, Best Sportsman of the SLLI, a Regiment which had during its life span of more than 126 years produced the most number of athletes to both the Army and the country, received ‘Colours’ from the Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army, amidst rounds of applause.

Several eye-catching cultural spectacles and scintillating musical rhythms, many of which had been choreographed by famed artistes of national standards as a special tribute to the national roles of the SLLI, held the spectators intermittently spellbound as the day’s agenda was reaching its climax in a setting of curiosity and excitement.

Presentation of the ‘Colours’ to the best of the best in the SLLI commenced as the Chief Guest was invited to the stage to make the final segment of the presentation. Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake congratulated all 80 who received ‘Army Colours’ from him in the grand ceremony, and finally awarded the special trophies to Best Sportsmen in the SLLI.

General (Retd) Shantha Kottegoda, a former Commander of the Army also joined the presentation of ‘Colours’ to the recipients.

Mrs Dananjani Karunasekara, Chairperson, SLLI Seva Vanitha Unit, Deputy Chief of Staff, Senior Officers, Retired Senior Officers and Other Rankers were associated with the occasion.
