Major General Shantha Dissanayake, the new General Officer Commanding (GOC), 61 Division assumed duties on Thursday (10) during a simple ceremony at its office in the 61 Division Headquarters, Vavuniya.
The newly-appointed GOC on arrival at the premises was greeted to a Guard Turnout in keeping with military traditions.
The newly-appointed GOC afterwards signed a formal document to signify the acceptance of the new office.
To mark his assumption of office, the new GOC planted a sapling in the premises and added memories to the occasion.
As is the customary practice, the GOC addressed All Ranks before he joined for refreshments with everyone present.
Brigade Commanders, 611 and 613 Brigades, Commanding Officers of under command Battalions, Senior Officers and Other Rankers also were present during the occasion.
