General J.E.D Perera, Former Commander Laid to Rest Amidst Military Honours

Former Commander of the Army late General Deshamanya J.E.D Perera who has left indelible milestones in the annals of Sri Lanka Army, bade farewell to the Nation on Wednesday (14) evening, amidst a sea of his military comrades and other mourners at the General Cemetery, Borella.

Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, a few retired Commanders of the Army, Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Commander of the Navy and a host of distinguished retired and serving senior military officers attended the funeral that took place with full military honours.    

Troops in accordance with military traditions received the remains, presenting arms around Narahenpita junction before being taken in the gun carriage. Those participating in the solemn funeral ceremony at the cemetery afterwards listened to the Special Part I Order, issued by the Commander of the Army.  

Prior to the traditional special Part I Order, a special message of condolences sent by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa was presented to the occasion by Mayor for Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Urban Council, Mr. R. A. D. Janaka Ranawaka on behalf of the President.

The Special Part I Order was read to the gathering by an officer of the deceased’s Regiment of Sri Lanka Engineers before troops saluted their late Commander with firing of the symbolic 21 gun salute, the highest tribute a military officer could get in the event of his death.

Minutes after the Last Post, the bugle call that sounded, indicating that the great soldier has gone to his final rest, the remains were taken to the graveyard as everyone bade the final farewell to their beloved relative and the former military chief.  (See the Part I Order in full in News Highlights below
