General Jagath Jayasuriya Bids Farewell to Take Up CDS Appointment

Commander of the Army General Jagath Jayasuriya who added an indelible chapter to the military history in Sri Lanka after the conclusion of the three- decade long conflict against LTTE terrorism, this morning (31) symbolically handed over the office of the Commander to his successor, Major General R.M.D Ratnayake in accordance with military traditions.

General Jagath Jayasuriya is to take reins as new Chief of Defence Staff at the office of Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS) after a formal military ceremony. Wednesday (31) morning's ceremony at Army Headquarters was meant to bid farewell to the outgoing Army Commander General Jagath Jayasuriya.

General Jagath Jayasuriya on arrival at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) ground was accorded a Guard of Honour by soldiers of his own Sri Lanka Armoured Corps. He afterwards inspected the parade in the company of the parade commander. The Commander designate Major General R.M.D Rathnayake received him.   

Later on, during a formal tea party organized by the Army Headquarters, the outgoing Commander walked to some of his senior officers and Other Ranks to share a couple of thoughts with them on the eve of his departure from the Army.

His address to the officers afterwards was largely centered on achievements gained during his tenure.

After the address, General Jayasuriya left the Army Headquarters premises amidst good-bye cheers from his soldiers who street lined on both sides of the road leading to the Main Gate at MoD premises.
