Gajaba Volleyballers & Women’s Corps Team Emerge Champions in Inter Regiment Tournament

Amid a large gathering of Army sports-lovers, curtains came down on the annual ‘Inter Regiment Volleyball Championship - 2017’ tournament of the Army Sunday (28) evening at the National Youth Council Indoor Courts at Maharagama.

Both Army Men’s and Women’s teams competed in the Inter Regiment Volleyball Championship - 2017 tournament, organized by the Sri Lanka Army Volleyball Association.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army graced the finals and the awarding ceremony as the Chief Guest. Major General Dampath Fernando, Deputy Chief of Staff together with Major General Anura Sudasinghe, Director General Sports and Brigadier Devinda Perera, Chairman, Army Volleyball Committee welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival.

Major General Amal Karunasekara, Chief of Staff, Major General Shevendra Silva, Adjutant General and several Senior Officers watched the finals.

More than 20 Men’s teams and 4 Women’s teams competed during the tournament that went on in the past few weeks.

Gajaba Regiment (GR) Volleyball team secured the Championship of the finals beating the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) Volleyball team after a very close tussle.

In the women’s matches, Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps Volleyball team secured the Championship of the finals competing against Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps Women’s Volleyball team.

Towards the end of the ceremony, the Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army together with Major General Amal Karunasekara, Chief of Staff, Major General Dampath Fernando, Deputy Chief of Staff gave away trophies and certificates to the winners.
