Four Parallel Investigations into Salawa Explosion

Four parallel investigations will take place to ensure transparency of the investigations into the explosion at the Salawa Army camp, Army Media Spokesperson Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said.

“Investigations will be conducted by a committee comprised of senior officials from the Tri Forces, court of inquiry under the Army commander, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) .The Magistrate will also be presenting a report over the death of a soldier during the explosion,” he said.

This was revealed at the Cabinet Media briefing yesterday.

The Avissawella- Colombo road was open to the public yesterday and it was closed again for 10 minutes due to a small explosion the Brigadier said adding that the small explosions are normal and that they army will always ensure the security of the people before opening the roads to be used by the public.

When asked about the statement made by the Defence Secretary Kaurnasena Hettiarchchi that the explosion is suspected to have occurred during a fire drill, Brigadier Jayaweera said that the Secretary would have made that statement based on the information that he received but the real cause for the explosion can only be revealed after completing the investigations.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist as to why the Army intelligence unit is not a part of the investigations, Brigadier Jayaweera assured that the court of inquiry has the authority to get the support of all the Army units to conduct further investigations.
