First Lady & Commanders Witness Rugby Encounter


The much-awaited Army-Navy Rugby encounter in the Inter Club Dialog League Rugger Tournament got off the grounds at Police Field Headquarters, Thimbirigasyaya, Friday (22) afternoon,  kicking off at 3.00 p.m.

The exciting game of rugby with equally balanced two teams, Army Rugby Club and Navy Rugby Club, organized by Army Rugby Committee, was witnessed by Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa, First Lady both Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral D.W.A.S. Dissanayake, Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch as distinguished Guests.

The first half of the match turned tense and exciting as both teams remained neck to neck with 11 - 11 points.

Sri Lanka Navy ruggerites prevailed over their rivals and emerged victorious with 14-19 as the tussle came to the end. No doubt both teams put their rivals in turn under tremendous pressure before they clinched victory.

It has been evident that action on the part of Army players was determined and very much serious as the tussle unfolded. The final showdown of the tournament at Police Grounds with a massive crowd of Rugby enthusiasts took the plum as rounds of applause and cheering reverberated.

A large gathering of senior Army and Navy officers were present to witness the tussle in addition to large crowds.
