External Affairs Minister &;amp; Military Chiefs Attend Weekend Asia-Pacific Security Summit

A HIGH-LEVEL government delegation, led by Minister of External Affairs Prof G.L Peiris, in the company of Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, during the weekend (June 4 - 6), participated in the Singapore-based International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) organized ‘Asia Security Summit, the Shangri-Dialogue’.

The two-day summit, attended by more than fifteen ministerial delegates and over twenty top level senior military chiefs and leaders focused attention on varying themes, related to the Asian region, such as ‘Nation-building Amidst Conflict’, ‘Humanitarian and Disaster Relief in the Asia-Pacific’, etc. Minister G.L Peiris delivered his address on the theme, ‘Counter-Insurgency and Strengthening Governance’, paying much attention to the post -war scenario in Sri Lanka.

Both Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya had the privilege of holding separate bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the plenary sessions with military representatives of Pakistan, Malaysia, USA, and Singapore.  Minister Peiris also separately met foreign government officials in several Asia Pacific countries during and after the summit sessions.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya during his interactions with different senior military leaders explained how the Sri Lanka Army gained victory over terrorism several months back. Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, at the end of those separate meetings with foreign military leaders, presented mementos as a token of goodwill. Those foreign delegates reciprocated.
