Exercise ‘Mitra Shakti - 2016’ Draws to a Close

The fourth India-Sri Lanka joint training Exercise ‘Mitra Shakti-2016’ culminated Sunday evening (06) after a formal closing ceremony, held at Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), Headquarters, Ambepussa.

The 14-day joint Exercise covered modules such as understanding of transnational terrorism, developing interoperability, recreation activities conduct of joint tactical operations controlled by a Joint Command Post, etc, identical to face any terrorist threats whatsoever.

A two-minute silence was also observed on the same occasion in honour of late Pandith W. D. Amaradeva.

However, elaborate arrangements related to the closing ceremony of the Exercise was scaled down to simple formalities in view of the ongoing week of national mourning over the death of Pandith W.D. Amaradeva.

A contingent of 45 Indian Army personnel, including 6 officers participated in the two-week long Exercise, Mitra Shakthi - 2016 while the Sri Lanka Army was represented by Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) troops of the equal number.

The leader of the Indian delegation, Brigadier Sujeeth Shivaji Patil of the Indian Army participated as the Chief Guest in the closing occasion. The Indian contingent participating in the Exercise was commanded by Major Rakesh Roushan of the Indian Army.

On the close supervision of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Major General Chagi Gallage, Director General Infantry coordinated and supervised this 4th joint Exercise.

Brigadier A.P.I Fernando worked as the Exercise Director while Colonel G.M.C.K.B Ekanayake and Colonel K.R.K.K.T Bandara functioned as Deputy Directors of the ‘Exercise’.

Brigadier, Sujeeth Shivaji Patil of the Indian Army after addressing the parade declared the joint training exercise closed in accordance with formalities.

The day’s event came to end with a group photo and a special dinner. Brigadier A.P.I Fernando, Exercise Director delivered the thanking speech, in which he underlined the importance of maintaining sound understanding and relations between Sri Lankan and Indian forces.

Observers of both nations were unanimous in their praise for the professionally conducted Exercise which resulted in instilling of confidence in each other to counter the common threat of terror.

The Exercise demonstrated the determination of the two armies in working closely with each other to eradicate the menace of terrorism of all forms.

The closing ceremony was coloured with a presentation of ‘Angampora’ martial art.
