Sri Lanka Teachers’ Travel Club, Colombo in collaboration with the 56 Division Headquarters of the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) came forward to donate a stock of 20 push bicycles for the benefit of needy students at Bogaswewa Maha Vidyalaya on Friday (26) during a simple ceremony, held at the school premises.
Major General Kumudu Perera, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni and Ms Niyoli De Alwis, Chairperson, Sri Lanka Teachers’ Travel Club attended the distribution at the invitation of Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya, General Officer Commanding, 56 Division who was behind organizing the event. Considering hardships those students have to face in travelling to their schools for studies, particularly in the wake of hazards of elephants, lack of adequate public transport, the initiative was largely focused on many children of low-income groups who traverse on foot to school covering long distances.
The donation ceremony was organized by the troops of 561 Brigade under the directions of the Commander 561 Brigade, Colonel A. C. P Silva. Chairperson of Sri Lanka Teachers’ Travel Club, Colombo, Ms Niyoli De Alwis and Chief Executive Officers of ITN Mr. Chandana Thilakarathna, Officers, parents, Principals and students were present during the ceremony.
In the meantime, 561 Brigade troops under the 56 Division, following an initiative taken by Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya, General Officer Commanding, 56 Division launched their book donation (Phase-II) for libraries in the Wanni region. The distribution took place at Omanthai Vidyalaya earlier on 9 October and Vavuniya Hindu Central College on Thursday (25) in two separate ceremonies.
