Dogs Played Role in Defeat of LTTE – Army Vet.

DOGS were part of the success of the Sri Lanka Army due to the significant role they played in the Eelam War, Captain Dr. Sudeera Talagala said.

Speaking at the launch of the new postage stamp to mark the Humane Policy for Rabies Eradication at the BMICH yesterday, he said the 75 dogs in the Army are the best known in the world for their roles in detecting mines, explosives, warning the soldier and carrying out other important activities.

Dr. Talagala, who is the only veterinarian in the Army, said that what a dog needs in return is only love and affection.

He also said that everyone talks about internally displaced persons but nobody talks about the internally displaced dogs which on numerous occasions in the North and East had been the sole companion of the soldiers.

Ladies College Principal Nirmali Wickramasinghe said that schools encourage love for animals in many ways including pet shows.

She believes all children should be encouraged on animal welfare and care for animals should be incorporated in the school curricula.

Acting Posts and Export Development Minister Professor G.L Peiris said children should be exposed to nature.  He said environment is part and parcel in moulding a child into an adult.

He praised the Sathva Mithra President Sagarica Rajakarunanayake saying she was a trail blazer not for legislators or politicians but for society as a whole. (Courtesy: The Island)
