Delft Island Maha Vidyalayam's New Sports Pavillion Opened


Students at Delft Maha Vidyalayam, Jaffna, who showed their colours at the recent Inter House Athletic Meet, held their prize-giving ceremony on Wednesday (29) at the school playground.

Commander Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) Major General Udaya Perera graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the Principal. Director General Sri Lanka Coast Guard Rear Admiral Ravindra Vijayagunarathna and Senior Officers of the Army and Navy also attended the event.

Major General Udaya Perera, prior to participation in the main ceremony, declared opened the new Sports Pavillion at the Delft Maha Vidyalayam, constructed by the Navy with Rs. 1.1 million, provided by Moretom Cricket Club of Australia, Year 1956 group at Royal College, Colombo and Sri Lanka Coast Guard.

During the Chief Guest’s address, Jaffna Commander praised the leadership of Mrs. Sarathathevi Krishanthan, Principal of the school and the enthusiasm of teachers and students. He emphasized the importance of sports and urged the students to do both their studies and sports well and become useful citizens.

Uthayaraja Jelansika who led the drill display and Nitharshan, the school band leader received special gifts from the Jaffna Commander for their excellent performances shown during the event. He also handed over a special financial gift to the principal for development of the school further. 

Rear Admiral Ravindra Vijayagunarathna, Mrs. Sarathathevi Krishanthan and Dr. A.D. Wilson, a member of the 56 Group Old Boys’ Association, Royal College addressed the gathering.

Rev. Fr. Amal Raj and people of Delft Island were present on the occasion.
