Defence Service College Students Showcase Their First Exhibition of Artistic Skills

The Defence Services College organized ‘Viru Daru Sithuwam 2010’, the exhibition that showcased War Hero children’s artistic talents in painting and handicrafts was declared open jointly at National Art Gallery by Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Director for Aesthetic Studies at Ministry of Education Mr Thushara Gunatillake Tuesday (3) morning.

Viru Daru Sithuwam 2010’, the first ever exhibition of this kind after this special college was founded some 42 months ago for the benefit of War Hero children, has been put on display as a special project under the 6-S Committee in the college, dedicated to mould an environment-friendly and aesthetically-rich child.

The exhibition was opened by both Chief Guests who took a keen interest in viewing all the paintings and artifacts while making inquiries from students and college authorities about the uniqueness and colourfulness of the exhibits. College students welcomed the guests offering traditional sheaves of betel on their arrival at the venue. 

Minutes after the formal opening, all distinguished visitors were conducted to the adjoining John De Silva Memorial Hall for the rest of the day’s programme. After the traditional oil lamp was lit, students at Defence Services College rent the air with their college anthem, to be followed by welcome speeches, one by a student and the other by Mr W.A.P.J. Wickremasinghe, Principal, Defence Services College.

All the students in the primary section who produced artistic products and exhibits to the occasion were awarded certificates as well as medals for the best ones by distinguished guests. 

Mr Thushara Gunatillake, Director for Aesthetic Studies at Ministry of Education, Major General R.K.P. Ranaweera, (retd), Director, Defence Services College and a few others addressed the gathering.
