Curtains Come Down on SLAVF Athletic Championship


More than 3000 sports-loving officers and other ranks in the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) vied with each other in the finals of the Inter Regiment Athletic Championship Tournament, held during July 15-17 at Colombo Sugathadasa Stadium.

The tournament, competed by 20 male teams and 5 women’s teams, belonging to 103 Volunteer Battalions, saw its closing ceremony on Thursday (17) evening, amid a large gathering of spectators, headed by Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest.

Major General S.W.L Daulagala, Commandant, SLAVF welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival at the Sugathadasa Stadium and conducted him to inaugurate the day’s proceedings.

The Championship Tournament, now an annual event in the SLAVF sports calendar has swelled to be one of the most popular features among athletes serving the SLAVF with making of new records in events, like 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, Javelin throw, etc.

Major General S.W.L Daulagala on Tuesday (15) inaugurated the first day of the annual tournament with several marathon and other events, coming to a close with decisive gains.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army gave away trophies and certificates to the winners.

With the hoisting of the National Flag by the Commander of the Army, SLAVF flag by the SLAVF Commandant and recital of the National Anthem, the day’s proceedings got underway amidst cheers and applause.

A mammoth gathering of SLAVF officers, other ranks, senior officers of the Army, other ranks and invitees attended the day’s closing ceremony.
