Curtains Come Down on ‘Army Athletics Championship’

The closing ceremony of the 54th ‘Army Athletics Championship’ and award of trophies to winners in the event took place Thursday (5) evening at Diyagama Stadium, Homagama.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake graced the occasion as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Athletics Committee, Major General Sudath Perera.

The 54th Army Athletics Championship Meet - 2017 began on Tuesday (3). Multi-coloured Army band displays, march-pasts, traditional Angampora and other entertaining features, added variety and entertainment to the final closing ceremony as soldiers in their hundreds together with sports fans thronged the stadium.

The overall Championship in Men’s events went to the athletes of Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) while Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) became the runners up.

In women’s category, 6 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (6 SLAWC) athletes claimed the championship while 2 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps (2 SLAWC) became the runners up.

Towards the end of the day’s event, the Chief Guest awarded trophies and medals to the competitors who excelled in different fields of athletics during the Meet.

After distribution of trophies to the winners, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army read out the closing remarks.

Lieutenant General Senanayake was welcomed on arrival at the occasion by Major General Sudath Perera, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Athletics Committee.

The 54th Army Athletics Meet - 2017 of the Sri Lanka Army started off on Tuesday (3) at Diyagama Stadium, Homagama where Major General Rohana Bandara, Director General of the Army Sports, ceremonially opened the event, amid a large gathering of athletes and officers.

1500 Army athletes from all Regiments participated in respective track and field events.
