Cultivation of Income-Generating Crops Introduced among SF-East Troops

As one more of multifarious educative and awareness projects, being conducted by the Security Force Headquarters-East for the benefit of all ranks, a new initiative, intended to uplift the living standards of SF-East soldiers through agro-based self-employment income generating ventures, was launched on a concept of Major General Aruna Jayasekera, Commander, Security Forces -East intending to in the Security Forces (East) on Tuesday (25).

A series of training sessions for production of agriculturally useful crops were organized accordingly at the Security Force Headquarters -East with the view to tapping inherent cultivation skills among all ranks for promotion of an agro-economy, financially advantageous to the soldiers in particular and the Nation at large. Thereby, a lecture on TJC Mango cultivation was delivered by Mr. I G Weerasooriya, Manager of Ellawala Horticulture (Pvt) Ltd and his assistant, Mrs. Chandima Madhushani.

On the following day (26), the soldiers were educated on bee farming with a fruitful awareness session, led by Mr. Tissa Bandara Thambawita, Secretary of the ‘Bingu Sampath Surakime Sanwidhanaya’ and a lecture on mushroom cultivation by Mr R.A.T.K.M Ranaweera, aiming at providing an additional source of income for soldiers.

The closing ceremony of these sessions got underway on Thursday (27 ) at the Headquarters of 5 (Volunteer) Battalion of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps, Dalukana in the presence of Mr. N.K.G.K Nemmawatta, Secretary to the State Ministry of Defence as the Chief Guest.

Mr. Sasika Wasalage - Project Officer of the Ministry of Primary Industries and Social Empowerment, Major General Manoj Mudannayaka - Commander FMA -East and Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps, Major General Kapila Udalupola - GOC 23 Division, Brigadier Michael Wanniarachchi - BAQ SFHQ (East), Colonel Roshan Jayamanna - Commander 232 Brigade, Colonel R Elvitigala - Commander 233 Brigade and Major S G M Premathilaka , the Commanding Officer 5(V) SLAWC were also among those present during the closing ceremony.
