Concerned Commander Donates to Save Sergeant's Daughter's Life

Lending the fatherly eye on a child struck by a serious heart ailment the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya in response to a personal appeal made to him, took steps to donate a sum of Rs 2.5 lakhs for recovery of the 7 year old girl, confirmed afflicted with a critical cardiac disease. 

Father of the child, a Senior Non-commissioned Officer of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC), Sergeant Wijerathne G. G. currently serving at the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force Headquarters, Battaramulla is determined to save the life of his daughter, who had been now recommended to undergo the third surgery at Lanka Hospital, Colombo 5 at a cost of Rs 8 lakhs, after been operated twice before.

Medical specialists treating the child at Lanka Hospital after confirming the disease have advised the parents that the girl has to undergo three surgeries in three stages, but those exhausted parents after spending heavily for two surgeries within a short span of time are now determined to find necessary funds from donors and philanthropists.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya in response to the appeal, extended to him by the girl’s father for financial support, invited them to his office on Friday (16) and donated a cheque to the value of Rs 2.5 lakhs towards the medical cost of the child on behalf of all the officers and other ranks in the Army.           

The father, Sergeant Wijerathne, humbly accepted the ‘donation for life’ from the Commander of the Army and thanked the Army for its generosity and considerateness.
