Community in Distress Due to Cyclonic Winds Given Help

A group of soldiers in the 15 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) serving the 651 Brigade under the 65 Division in Kilinochchi rose to the occasion and rushed to assist people affected by a minor cyclonic situation in Thewampiddi and Pudukkadu villages in the Mallavi Divisional Secretariat area on Friday (22).

Inclement weather and cyclonic winds that affected those villages destroyed roofs of more than 15 houses and rendered about 74 people homeless, compelling them to move out of their houses and seek alternative shelters.

About 32 Army personnel were engaged in reconstructing 2 completely destroyed and 13 partially-damaged houses of those civilians with the support of affected people.

Realizing the emergency need, troops supplied roofing tiles and corrugated tin sheets brought for Army requirements and provided temporary canopies, available to the Army for temporary housing needs.

Meanwhile, 25 Army personnel of the 7 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) of the 652 Brigade cleared and renovated both sides of the bund at Akkarayankulam - Gonavil irrigation canal.

The ‘Shramadana’ campaign was organized under the directions of the Brigade Commander, 652 Brigade Colonel Lankeshwara Mahinkanda and under the supervision of General Officer Commanding, 65 Division, Major General Sarath Weerawardhana.
