Commander Talks to Wanni Troops & Spells Out His Objectives

The first formal visit of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake to the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) after he took over as the Army Commander, occurred on Saturday (14).

Elaborate arrangements at the SFHQ-W organized by Major General Kumudu Perera, Commander, SFHQ-W received the Commander of the Army in accordance with military traditions.

Military formalities, comprised of a Guard Turn Out and a Guard of Honour saluted the visiting Commander of the Army after Major General Kumudu Perera welcomed him to the premises.

The day’s prominent place went to the speech of the Commander during his visit to the Wanni Headquarters. He addressed a gathering of about 1000 SFHQ-W Officers and Other Ranks where the Commander, on the occasion, spelt out his future objectives to the Officers and Other Ranks serving the SFHQ-W.

He emphasized the need, as in any other Army in peacetime, to keep the momentum of continued training. In his view, the Commander said that ‘1/3 of the Army should always have Combat Readiness, another 1/3 for nation-building and the remaining 1/3 for administration of the Army and it is high time for us to re-build and promote the image of the organization’ he said.

Towards the end of the formal troop address, the Commander was invited to share refreshments with all ranks before the next item in the agenda.

A few minutes later, the Commander’s visit to the Wanni was made memorable by inviting him to plant a sapling inside the SFHQ - W premises as a gesture of memory.

The visit was made more enlightening as Major General Kumudu Perera, Commander, SFHQ-W made a presentation to the Commander on SFHQ-W current roles and tasks as well as other matters of security concern.

Major General Kumudu Perera before the Commander’s departure presented a symbolic memento to him as a token of appreciation of his visit to the SFHQ-W.

The visiting Commander did not forget to sign the Visitor’s book before he left the premises.
