Commander Shares New Year Thoughts &;amp; Sweetmeats with All Ranks Serving Headquarters

The Army Headquarters in Colombo ceremonially marked the dawn of Sinhala and Hindu New Year on Thursday (19) morning with the participation of the Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest and a representative gathering of officers and other ranks serving it.

The simple occasion included a table full of traditional sweetmeats, organized for all ranks and a special visit by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya to the Attidiya-Bellanthara-based  ‘Mihindu Seth Medura’ (wellness resort) where a large group of permanently disable War Heroes are cared and rehabilitated for the rest of their lives.

As the Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Jayasuriya upon his arrival at the venue for the New Year tea table was warmly received and conducted directly to inaugurate the auspicious table, replete with sweetmeats such as milk rice, oil cakes, athirasa, and so forth which typically symbolize the dawn of this all important national festival, enjoyed by both Sinhalese and Hindus alike at around the same day and time. The Army Chief, off from his busy commitments, spoke freely to soldiers present at the event and spent about an hour with them.

Recuperating soldiers at other Military Hospitals in and around Colombo simultaneously received gift parcels, organized by the Commander’s secretariat at Army Headquarters as one of the special features of the day’s programme.
