Commander Interacts With Injured Wanni Soldiers

COMMANDER OF THE ARMY General Sarath Fonseka in the aftermath of the War just ended went to Colombo Military Hospital this morning (5) in order to interact with War Heroes recuperating from injuries received during Wanni battles.

General Fonseka, deeply concerned about their medical progress and needs spoke to medical specialists attending those inmates and received a first-hand account on each and every soldier undergoing treatment for serious injuries. General Sarath Fonseka inquired into possibilities of sending soldiers on long-term treatment to their houses for a change while under treatment and bring back. Commander pointed out that they would be more comfortable and psychologically sound if they were to visit home front and return. The visiting Army Chief maintained that injuries caused by LTTE heavy weapons would take much longer time than general battle injuries.

General Fonseka interacted with all the soldiers receiving medical attention and shared a couple of views with them. During the ward visits, General Fonseka was moved by the invaluable service of two soldiers who contributed to annihilate the LTTE since inception of the  eastern operations but  got injured during the last leg of the humanitarian operation at Puthumattalan. General Fonseka, reminiscent of their contribution to this brutal war, forced on the Sri Lanka Army due to LTTE atrocities, spoke high of them and wished them speedy recovery before he moved to the next ward.

Gen. Fonseka presented special gift parcels brought with him to his loving soldiers who carried out his instructions. He also did not forget to inquire about  their home fronts and personal problems, if any. He also instructed his senior officers to ensure all domestic requirements of those families are adequately looked into as early as possible.

At the same time, he advised responsible authorities to be alert to the rapid spread of Dengue epidemic in the areas where military establishments are found and ensure all necessary precautionary measures are taken well in advance.

A section of Senior Officers at Army Headquarters and medical staff at the hospital were also associated during the tour.
