Commander Extends ‘Deepavali’ Greetings

It is with great pleasure that I extend this greetings on the happy and solemn occasion of the Deepavali festival celebrated today by all Sri Lankan Hindus.

Deepavali, the ‘Festival of Lights’, marks the commencement of the Hindu New Year as per the Chandra calendar. This Festival is of great significance as it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance, which are the eternal quests of humankind.

The Deepavali Festival, being a unifying force that spreads understanding, tolerance and harmony among all people irrespective of ethnic, religious, caste or class differences, is a fitting occasion for us to redouble our efforts to bring about greater understanding among our people, and strengthen peace and harmony in this country. This festival is an expression of veneration and gratitude to the Hindu deities for the attainment of knowledge and understanding that aids us to overcome the evils that arise from ignorance.

This festive day of Deepavali, which underlines the great spiritual values of Hinduism, is filled with the spirits of love and devotion, and is an occasion for Hindus to strive for greater spirituality, foster understanding among communities, and increase harmony among people. The religious rituals and festivities that Hindus practice during this time of celebrations add to the spirit of reconciliation that prevails in the country. Deepavali brings to mind the divine words “Peace on earth and goodwill towards mankind”.

The glow of Deepavali will spread a message of joy amongst people who cherish the values of Hinduism and will spread the spirit of sharing in the comfort and tranquility of peace.

So, on this special day, while we exchange good wishes and entertain hope for a better future, may the abiding light of goodwill and the message of peace of Deepavali lead all of you to the joy of a memorable festival of enlightened harmony.
