Commander Exchanges Views on Bilateral Issues with UN Under Secretary

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who arrived at New York’s UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations on Friday (16) en route for Haiti to inspect Sri Lanka’s contingent of Peacekeeping troops, kept to his itinerary and had a cordial round of talks with Ms Susana Malcorra, Under Secretary General of the Department of Field Support at UN Peacekeeping Headquarters.

Earlier, the visiting Sri Lanka’s Army Chief Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya met Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, Military Adviser and UN Assistant Secretary for Department of Peacekeeping Operations for a cordial exchange of views on matters of bilateral relevance to both the UN agency and the Sri Lanka Army.

Under Secretary General Ms Susana Malcorra during her interaction with the visiting Commander of the Army touched on certain ground developments taking place in Haiti and praiseworthy roles and tasks being performed by Haiti-based Sri Lankan troops in the past couple of years.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, extending gratitude to the UN Peacekeeping Department for its unfailing support to the Sri Lankan battalion (SRIBAT), assured the UN agency of his continuing co-operation with deployments in the future too.

MINUSTAH, a UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti that has been in operation since 2004 is composed of 8,940 military personnel and 3,711 Police and concentrates on assisting the Haitian National Police, maintenance of law and order, provision of humanitarian aid, community projects, etc.
