Commander Ends His Bangladesh Visit With A Sojourn At Bangladesh Peace Support Training Institute

Sri Lanka Army delegation now in Bangladesh, headed by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on Sunday (15) as the final segment of their five-day tour in that country, was conducted to have a closer look at the workings of Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT), the replica of the Institute of Peace Support Operations Training Sri Lanka (IPSOTSL) in Kukuleganga.

Accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna and two other officers, the delegation arrived at the BIPSOT to be received warmly by Brigadier General Abul Bashar Imamuzzaman, Commandant BIPSOT and other senior officers.

Soon after the welcome, a detailed account on the roles and tasks of the BIPSOT presented before the visiting delegation aptly summed up how the BIPSOT gradually through hard work and utmost dedication emerged as one of the premier peace-keeping institutes in the region which has by now received global recognition. Its scope of training in the wake of changing dimensions of conflicts addresses training aspects of all types of UN peace support operations after it was originally founded in 1999, though Bangladesh has sent her selected officers to UN missions as and when requested before 1999, the delegation was told.

BIPSOT officers afterwards invited the visiting Sri Lankan delegation to have a closer look at the BIPSOT premises in order to learn how practical training sessions are conducted, using modern equipment and other accessories. Lieutenant General Jayasuriya during his stay at BIPSOT made inquiries into different modules being taught in the BIPSOT curriculum taking many international burning issues into its consideration to uplift its standards.

Before the delegation’s exit from the venue, the BIPSOT honoured the visiting Sri Lankan Army Chief by awarding him a special memento as a token of goodwill and understanding. The delegation as dusk fell on Sunday (15) visited Sena Bhaban, the official residence of the Chief of Army Staff, Bangladesh Army following an invitation extended to his Sri Lankan counterpart. The Commander’s itinerary in Bangladesh is expected to end late Sunday evening.
