Commander Commends Army Performance in South Asian Games

LIEUTENANT GENERAL JAGATH JAYASURIYA, Commander of the Army this morning (18) during a special interaction with Army sportsmen and women who excelled in the recently-concluded 11th South Asian Games (SAG) tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh commended them for their achievements and glory brought to the Army.  

The Army sportsmen and women  in the Sri Lankan contingent won two Gold Medals, eight Silver Medals and seventeen Bronze Medals in 1500 m, 100 x 4 m, Marathon, 400 x 4 (four silver in men/women athletic categories), Long Jump, Shooting, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Taekwondo, Cycling and Weightlifting events respectively during the SAG tournament.               

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya after meeting all twenty-six participants in the Army team at the Army sports stadium, Army Headquarters spoke high of their records and made inquiries about their continued training practices, future requirements, participation in other international events and personal necessities for promotion of their skills if any, etc.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya assured continuous support to those athletes in the future too and instructed Director Army Sports to attend to their needs and facilities, if any and help them further promote their talents in whatever way possible.  

The tournament took place in Bangladesh from 29th January 2010 until 9th February 2010, attended by all Asian nations.  Sri Lankan sportsmen and women including Army participants secured a record number of Golds, Silvers and Bronze Medals in the tournament.
