Commander, Chief Guest at Inter-Regiment Boxing Championship

The Inter-Regiment Boxing Championship - 2012, organized by the Army Boxing Committee came to a close at Panagoda Army Cantonment gymnasium on Tuesday (31) with the participation of 12 Regiments.

The final tussle for championship was witnessed by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army who himself has been a veteran in boxing having achieved international referee status. He graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

Boxers from Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment, Sri Lanka Engineers, Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Gajaba Regiment, Gemunu Watch, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Engineer Service Regiment, Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps and Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police and lady boxers from 2 Women’s Corps and 3 Women’s Corps competed in the final encounter.

Chairman, Army Boxing Committee Major General R.V. Samaratunga welcomed the Chief Guest on his arrival at the venue.

Boxers of the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps carried the trophy in the tournament after a close encounter. Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps emerged runners-up while Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment secured the third place. Trophies to the winners were given away by the Chief Guest.

Private W.A.C.I. Perera of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps was adjudged the Best Boxer and Lance Corporal A.M.C.E. Bandara of Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police became the Best Looser.

In the Women’s Corps sector, they had two bouts during the last phase of the championship tournament. Four uncontested winners were awarded colours at the occasion.

A large gathering of boxing fans including members of civil organizations and boxing fans attended the occasion.
