Commander's Fatherly Care Extended to Save NCO's One-Year Old Infant

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, in response to an appeal made by a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), seeking medical expenditure for his one-year old infant’s liver transplanting surgery, donated Rs 5 lakhs through the welfare fund of the Army on Monday (10).

The one-year old infant, Praboth Lakshan Balasooriya, suffering from an acute liver disease, has been recommended a liver transplant surgical operation at Chennai-based Global Hospital in India at a cost of about Rs 70 lakhs by Sri Lankan medical experts, if his life were to be salvaged.

However, his father, Corporal B.S.M Balasooriya of Military Intelligence Corps (MIC), unable to find necessary exorbitant funds for his son’s most vital surgery, has earlier written to the Commander, expecting his good offices and patronage to save his infant’s life.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya this morning (10) after summoning the infant’s father, an NCO to the Commander’s secretariat, made inquiries into his son’s condition and made the donation on behalf of the Army, wishing the baby a fast recovery.

The infant who has been earlier referred to the same Chennai Hospital for medical consultations through the medical specialist, Dr Padmakanthi Wijesuriya, Consultant Paediatrician, was recommended an immediate liver transplant within a matter of 2-3 months.

The father, Corporal Balasooriya upon receipt of the cheque to the value of Rs 5 lakhs from the Commander of the Army thanked him lavishly for his kind considerateness and thoughtfulness since the parents alone find it difficult to afford the cost of the surgery. Balance money is to be raised through other channels.
