Children of SLAVF War Heroes Offered Schols &;amp; Incentives

A total of 646 children of officers and soldiers serving the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) during a ceremony at Nelum Pokuna on Friday (26), received educational assistance as scholarships to the value of Rs 12 million, including 18 new laptop computers.

Award of such incentives to school-going children of SLAVF War Heroes has been an annual feature in the organization’s calendar for the past few years.

Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development took part in the distribution ceremony as the Chief Guest, together with Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Seva Vanitha Unit, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army and Mrs. Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Army Seva Vanitha Unit at the invitation of Major General S.W.L Daulugala, Commandant, SLAVF.

Under this year’s scholarship programme, 646 students who shone in the Grade 5 examination, G.C.E (O/L) examination and the G.C.E (A/L) examinations, qualifying to receive university admission, were awarded those scholarships.

Students of Grade 5 examination, G.C.E (O/L) and G.C.E (A/L) achievers accordingly received Rs 15,000/=, Rs 20,000/= and Rs 50000/= each worth scholarships respectively during the ceremony.

In addition, 18 new laptops that would help higher studies of those university entrants were gifted to 18 students at the same ceremony.
 
Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, Major General S.W.L Daulugala and Mrs. Saroja Daulugala, Chairperson, SLAVF Seva Vanitha Unit joined in succession for the distribution of those scholarships and other incentives during the ceremony.

On the same occasion a cheque to the value of Rs 4 million, earned through a lottery was also presented to the Commander of the Army by SLAVF Commandant to be used for welfare roles of the soldiers. Likewise a cheque to the value of Rs 3 million was presented to Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, Ministry of Defence Seva Vanitha Unit for the use of welfare roles of the Seva Vanitha Unit.
    
Major General S.W.L Daulugala, Commandant, SLAVF made the welcome speech and Major General W.D.L.P Wickramasinghe raised the votes of thanks.

Senior officers including Chief of Staff, Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General E.M.M. Ambanpola and Deputy Commandant, SLAVF, Major General W.D.L.P Wickramasinghe, officers, spouses, scholarship recipients and several sponsors of the programme were present at the ceremony.
