Chess Championship - 2018 for Injured, Blind & All Army Personnel Ends

The prize-awarding ceremony of the Inter Regiment & Injured War Heroes’ Chess Championship – 2018 got underway at the Defence Services College, Colombo 2 on Friday (5).

The Sri Lanka Army Chess Committee organized preliminary matches in the Inter Regiment & Injured War Heroes’ Chess Championship - 2018 kicked off at both Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) Regimental Headquarters auditorium and Pangolla ‘Abhimansala 3’ during 29 December, 2017 - 4 January, 2018.

Adding a new feature, vision-impaired and injured War Heroes performed their talents during the same tournament.

The competition was conducted under three categories and the SLSC clinched the championship trophy for the year 2018 under the Inter Regiment Men’s category. In the vision-impaired and injured War Heroes’ category ‘Abhimansala 3’ inmates secured the championship slot. SLSC woman competitors secured the Women’s trophy.

Major General Amal Karunasekara, Chief of Staff graced the prize awarding ceremony as the Chief Guest.

It was just a few days ago, the Army Chess team secured the first place in the ‘mercantile and government sector’ category during the four-day long Ethugalpura Internationally-rated Chess Challenge Tournament, competed by more than 34 island-wide Chess teams.

Held at the Blue Sky Hotel, the tournament was coordinated and organized by Ethugalpura Knight Flame Chess Club.

The winners are as follows;

Best player (Champion) - Men’s Individual - Sgm L.D Madusanka (5 SLSC)

Runner Up - Men’s individual - Captain W.V.N Wimaladeva (SLSC)

Best Player (Champion) - Women’s Individual - Sgw W.A.S Warakapola (11 SLSC)

Runner Up - Women’s Individual - Sgw J.I.M Alwis (11 SLSC)
