The inaugural opening session of the Buttala Officer Career Development Centre’s (OCDC) annual seminar, themed on ‘Dynamics of Conflicts; Analysis within Regional and Global Context’ took place Thursday (31) morning at Buttala.
At the invitation of Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army, Admiral Ravindra C Wijegunaratne, Chief of Defence Staff as the Chief Guest inaugurated the session after lighting the traditional oil lamp and making the keynote address to the occasion.
The day’s Chief Guest was greeted to a drive-past Guard Turnout on entering the premises in accordance with military traditions. The traditional oil lamp lighting paved the way for the OCDC Commandant, Brigadier Chandana Gunawardana to deliver the formal welcome speech.
The Session I commenced with the introductory remarks. It was followed by the contribution made by Dr Harinda Vidanage on ‘Evolution of the world order following the end of the Cold War’. Dr Sithara Fernando, of the Kotelawala Defence University made his contribution to the opening day sessions on ‘Strategic aspirations of the major powers and how the Asia pacific turns into a hub of converging and conflicting interests’.
The Chairman for the second session was Major General Vijitha Ravipriya, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division.
As the first speaker Mr Asantha Senevirathne from the KDU spoke on ‘Geopolitics, grand strategies and security concerns of small nations in South Asia’. The second speaker Mr Sanath De Silva of the KDU educated the participants on the topic ‘Nuclear complexities in South Asia.’
All sessions followed interactive question & answer sessions under the guidance of panelists.
Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General Rukmal Dias, Commander, Security Forces - Central, Major General Dananjith Karunarathne, Director General General Staff, Major General Ajith Wijesinghe, Military Secretary and more than sixty Senior Officers of the Sri Lanka Army and the Navy are attending the two-day seminar sessions. The two-day sessions culminate on Friday.
