Buddhists Get Army Assistance for ‘Pinkama’

A ‘Cheevara Pooja’, offer of new robes to monks during the rainy season and an alms-giving at Sri Samiddhi Sumana Vihara at Navatkuly got underway on Monday (17).

The procession of the Cheevara Pooja ceremony paraded for the fourth consecutive year at Sri Samiddhi Sumana Viharaya premises with the participation of civilians and military personnel.

The Dhamma sermon and other respective religious activities were conducted by the Chief Incumbent, Ven Hanwelle Rathnasiri Thero.

The Pinkama was organized by Buddhists who live in Navatkuly village with the assistance of the 523 Brigade. The Katina procession contained Hindu and Sinhala cultural troupes. The last segment of the religious event followed an overnight Pirith chanting and an alms-giving to 69 monks and 10 nuns, the following morning.

On the instructions of the General Officer Commanding, 52 Division, Major General Aruna Wanniarachchi, troops of the battalions serving the 523 Brigade provided meals to all devotees who took part in the event.
