A new cricket turf, prepared at the Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) Regimental Headquarters at Panagoda was recently opened by Major General Rukmal Dias, Colonel Commandant, SLA during a brief ceremony and a friendly cricket match.
The new cricket ground with four turfs can be made available to outside cricketers and clubs enabling them to conduct first class games and other national level tournaments if they so desire. In essence, this new ground suits international matches and also for national level tournaments.
Soon after the opening, the ground was warmed with the first T20 match played between the Army cricketers in the Sri Lanka Artillery and a combined team of national players at the request of the Army.
Major General V.R Silva (Retd), Mr. Bandula Warnapura (Sri Lankan first Test Cricket Captain), Major General Nishantha Wanniarachchi, Adjutant General, Major General Vijitha Ravipriya, Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi, Major General Anura Sudasingha, Director General Sports, Senior Officers, invitees and a large gathering of cricket fans attended the inaugural ceremony.
