Army Woman Rowers Emerge Champions in Open Category


Army Rowers, competing in the 29th National Rowing Championship tournament at Diyawannawa, carried away the ‘Airtel Challenge Trophy’ in women’s category as well as the Championship in over 18 (male) category.

In addition, the Army male team won the runners-up slot in the open category in the tournament.

The tournament, organized by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) at the Diyawannawa Rowing Center, Battaramulla during June 26-28, drew a huge gathering of spectators.  

Private A.M Somarathne of Sri Lanka Armored Corps (SLAC) won a Gold Medal and Lieutenant S.A Vivekananda of Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR) won the Bronze Medal in the ‘Scull event’ in men’s open category.

Army rowers (men) meanwhile won the gold medal for ‘Pair event’ and ‘Double Scull event’ and also claimed one silver medal in the ‘Coxed Four event’ (over 18) category.

Meanwhile, Army woman rowers clinched the Championship by winning a gold medal for ‘Pair event’ and ‘Coxed Four event’ in the open category.
