Sri Lanka Army weight-lifters won the overall National Championship (men’s) at the recent All-Island Shakthi Weight-Lifting Tournament, held at Wadduwa Vijaya Kumarathunga auditorium, beating eight more rival teams.
Accordingly, Sri Lanka Army participants in (59 kg), (66 kg), (74 kg) and (120 + kg) secured 4 Gold medals, making 5 new National Records.
Corporal S.K Preedep of 26 Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) as the Best Weight-Lifter made three Sri Lankan Records by lifting a total of 465 kg under Scot and Dead Lift systems. Corporal A.N.S Silva of 7 Battalion Engineer Services Regiment meanwhile secured a Gold medal in 120+kg weight category and made two National Records. He under Scot System succeeded in lifting 180 kg and 485 kg categories, thus creating new records.
Lance Corporal D.W Shivanka of 2 Battalion (V) Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC), Private Y.G.S Samaraweera of 12 Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) in 66 kg and 74 kg categories respectively won Gold medals in the same tournament.
Meanwhile, three other Silver medals and one Bronze medal were also won by the Army participants to be qualified for the national status.
