Army Undertakes to Build 100 Houses for Jaffna IDPs

To be in line with the government’s ongoing project for construction of new houses for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Jaffna peninsula, the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) has undertaken the challenging task of constructing 100 new houses within a matter of 45 days.

Those new houses to be built in the Valikamam North area, using the funds, allocated by the government exclusively for this purpose will enable the IDPs to return to their original places of residence once completed.

The foundation-laying ceremony for the first house to be built at Keeramalai area took place recently during a brief ceremony, headed by Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J), together with Mr B Senthilnathan, Additional District Secretary for Jaffna. The commercial value of a house, including the land of 20 perches, has been estimated at Rs 4.3 million and the project will thus enable those IDPs to resettle in their original places.

Engineer troops of the Army expect to complete the project within 45 days and hand them over to the District Secretariat for necessary distribution and documentation.
