Army Troops Together with Others Douse Shop Fire in Matara

More than 200 Army personnel of the Matara 3(V) Gemunu Watch (GW) camp under the 58 Division of the Security Force Headquarters-West (SFHQ-West) together with the assistance of fire fighters, policemen, Navy & Air Force personnel managed to douse a raging fire that erupted in a shop along old Tangalle Road Thursday (14) evening completely.

The fire that broke out at about 6.45 p.m. due to an electrical fault has spread to the adjoining line of shops as well when troops and fire fighters started rushing to the scene.

The fire has gutted the shop that sell fishing nets and other accessories causing a considerable loss but the nearby line of shops escaped unaffected owing to the timely intervention of rescue teams.

On being informed of the incident, Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, SFHQ-West instructed the General Officer Commanding, 58 Division to swiftly dispatch a rescue team to the spot and take all necessary steps to control the further spread of the fire.

However, the fire was brought under control in less than 3 hours by about 9.40 p.m.
