Army Troops Receive More Teeth for Development Work

SRI LANKA Army troops presently well geared up to contributing to the government’s “Uthuru Wasanthaya” (Northern Spring) development programme received further teeth on Wednesday (28) when the government released a new stock of modern machinery and equipment  to the Army for use in development work in the north.

A brief ceremony near the Galle Face esplanade saw the new feet of modern machinery and equipment, bought by the government from China on a concessionary loan of Rs. 2049 million delivered officially to Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya by Mr. Basil Rajapaksa (MP), Senior Presidential Advisor, Head of Presidential Task Force for Northern Development and Ms. Yang Xiu Ping, Ambassador for Republic of China.

The stock included 29 ten wheel-dump trucks, 66 vibratory rollers, fifteen 6000 litre capacity water bowsers with their pumps, eight crawler mini excavators, nine hydraulic crane loaders, nine prime motors for pulling low bed trailers, nine 40 feet low bed trailers, four asphalt pavers (wheel type), two asphalt pavers (crawler type), twelve pneumatic tyre rollers, seventy-nine walk behind rollers (700 kg), eleven 8-ton static rollers and four generator sets (400 KVA).

With this new addition, north and east based Army troops are able to accelerate their development projects, bringing fresh hopes for the people in those areas. The equipment is to be used for construction of new roads, tank bunds, excavations and various developmental work in both these areas.

The fleet of new machinery was symbolically handed over this morning (28) to Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya by Mr. Basil Rajapaksa and Ms. Yang Xiu Ping after offering keys for new machinery.

Governor for Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri,  Secretary Ministry of Highways and Road Development Admiral (Retd) Wasantha Karannagoda,  Ambassador for Republic of ChinaYang Xiu Ping and a number of invitees were present on the occasion at Galle Face esplanade, Colombo.
