Army Troops Arrest Spread of Fire in Moneragala Town

A sudden fire broke out in a line of shops in the heart of Moneragala town during small hours on Monday (21) at about 1.50 a.m was brought under full control within a few hours by 121 Brigade troops of the12 Division under the Security Force Headquarters – Central (SFHQ-Cen).

The fire has erupted through an electrical defect in this line of shops selling electrical appliances and furniture which was reportedly about to spread to other adjacent buildings too at the time troops rushed to the location.

In response to the SOS request, made by the Moneragala Police station to the troops for help, 121 Brigade troops, together with fire fighters and the Police managed to douse the spreading fire despite strong winds that prevailed at that time.

Several fire fighting vehicles of the ‘Uma Oya’ project also came to the location for help on being informed. Timely action of the Army troops prevented the spread of fire to other shops in the town.

On the directions of Major General Nishantha Wanniarachchi, General Officer Commanding, 12 Division of the Security Force Headquarters-Central, commanded by Major General Rukmal Dias, 121 Brigade Commander and his troops actively contributed to this immediate need and did the needful avoiding further damage.
