Army Troops on 'Op Tsunami Alert' Rehearsal

Army troops serving coastal areas around the country on Monday (5) began rehearsing their contingency plans that should be put into practice in the event of a natural disaster like the Tsunami in December 2004 following directions given by the Directorate of Operations at the Army Headquarters.

The rehearsals scheduled for (March 5 - April 27) cover 28 Brigade Headquarters including those in the North and East of the country. 121 Brigade Headquarters (Galle), 143 Brigade Headquarters (Puttalam), 221 Brigade Headquarters (Trincomalee) and 512 Brigade Headquarters (Ariyalai) commanded by Brigadier A.S Ariyasinghe, Brigadier P.J Gamage, Colonel S.P Seneviratne and Colonel A.P Pallewela respectively early Monday (5) morning conducted the rehearsal, code-named, ‘Operation Tsunami Alert’.

Rehearsal of those contingency plans is to be continued until the end of April this year on staggered basis under two phases with the participation of hundreds of both officers and soldiers serving respective coastal areas.
    
Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya has taken special interest in those rehearsals and instructed the Director Operations at Army Headquarters to carry out those training sessions as part of Army’s contingency plans that should be geared to meet with a disaster of this nature and magnitude.

Under the first phase (5 – 14 March), the rehearsals will take place at Kalupe, Palliwasalpaduwa, Casim Nagar, Jaya Nagar, Vakarai, Kalmunai, Ariyalai, Jaffna, Velvettithurai, Championpattu, Vedithalathivu, Alampil, Thevampiddi, Nachchikuda and Iranamapanagar areas.
