Army Swimmers Shine in 2-Mile Sea Swimming Championship in Balapitiya

Army male and woman swimmers in the 2- mile Swimming Championship - 2019 at Balapitiya beach on Saturday (16) shone prominently and clinched the overall Team Championship shield with 16 swimmers leading in the first group of 25 male swimmers and 7 woman swimmers finishing within the first 25 female swimmers.

Sri Lanka Coastal Guards who are playing an important role in saving many lives in the beaches around the country organized the event under the supervision of the Defence Ministry with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education. Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Association played an active role in organizing the event.

Members of the armed forces, Police, school swimmers, swimming clubs and foreigners including 31 Female and 294 Male Swimmers took part in the event. 21 Army men and 7 Army woman swimmers competed in the event under the supervision of the Army Aquatic Sports Committee.

Similarly, Private W.M.B.L Abeyrathna of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) was adjudged for the second place in the overall event. Gunner G.D.C.N Perera of Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) won the Individual Challenge Trophy in the differently-able male swimming category.

Likewise, the Team championship trophy for the Defence Service category was also won by Army Swimmers competing against Police swimmers finishing within 75 minutes.

Those gains were made possible due to close supervision of Major General H.G.I Vidyananda, Chairman, Army Aquatics Sports Committee and Quarter Master General of Sri Lanka Army who were instrumental in promoting aquatic sports in the organization after exposing swimmers to many training sessions.

Colonel Clifford De Zoysa, Vice Chairman, Army Aquatics Sports Committee and Captain L.R.K Peiris, Secretary to Army Aquatics Sports Committee and Head Coach for Army Swimming encouraged Army swimmers during the event.
