Army Swimmers in National Championship Carry Gold, Silver & Bronze Medals

Sri Lanka Army swimmers in the National Swimming Championship Tournament, just ended at Sugathadasa Indoor Swimming Pool Complex shone once again and secured Gold, Silver and Bronze medals under different categories.

It was the same last year’s Champion, Private Ishani Senanayake of the 2 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) who made a comeback this year, too and secured her first Gold in the 100m Freestyle. Private Senanayake clocked 1:02.24 minutes to win over others.

In separate convincing achievements, Private Senanayake of the 2 ( V ) SLAWC won another Gold competing in the 200 m Free Style on Friday (5) and a Silver medal in 50 m Free Style (Women) event as the tournament was drawing to a close by Saturday (6) evening.

Lance Corporal T.M.C.L Jayasinghe of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) meanwhile showing his colours brought honour to the Army by winning a Silver medal in 50m Breast Stroke event and a Bronze medal in 200m Breast Stroke event in the National Championship tournament.

In the final day, Lance Corporal T.M.C.L Jayasinghe of the SLCMP secured the Bronze medal in Men’s 100m Breast Stroke event.

Sri Lanka Army swimmers participating in the National Swimming Championship bagged 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals in total during the tournament.

The Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) treats the National Swimming Championship as the selection trial for the forthcoming 17th Federal Internationale De Natation (FINA) Championships - 2017 to be held in Budapest, Hungary.

The SLASU has also taken an initiative to have the National and Sub Junior Under 15 National Aquatic Championships - 2017 organized during the same period in the ongoing tournament. National Swimming Championship Tournament began on Wednesday (3) and culminated on Saturday (6) after a brief ceremony.

In what could be considered a rare gesture of distinction and performance, Army swimmers (Men) were hailed as Team Champions in the Novices category, as announced on Saturday (6).

The Army Swimming and Water Ball Committee, chaired by Major General Piyal Wickremaratne, Director General General Staff has been providing all the support, needed for training of those swimmers participating in national and international events.
