Army Supports Conduct of Seminar on 'Sustainable Development'

Troops of the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West), Quarter Master General of the Army, Directorate of Agriculture, Directorate of Army Band and Drama Art Performance, Corps of Engineer Services (CES) and other auxiliary wings on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, jointly assisted conduct of conference deliberations of the 'Collective of World Buddhists for 'Environment-Friendly Sustainable Development' which got underway this evening (1) at 'Sri Sadaham Sevana' premises in Rajagiriya, Borella.

The inauguration of the International Buddhist Conference sessions, headed by HE the President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest and Hon. Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr Rajitha Senaratne took place in the presence of Buddhist representatives from more than 20 foreign nations.

In response to a request, extended to the Commander of the Army for assistance by Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero, Convener, 'Pivithuru Hetak', the Sri Lanka Army assisted the entire project by preparing the landscape, hall arrangements, decorations, preparation of infrastructure facilities, coordination of all necessary requirements with other agencies, etc with the support of ‘Sadaham Sevana’ organizers.

Several International Buddhist Organizations, including 'China-Sri Lanka Buddhist Association', 'Shaddha Sevana' Foundation, foreign representatives and devotees are taking part in the conference sessions that would go on for four days in Colombo.

All participants in the sessions are expected to give a special pledge of allegiance to the topical theme while the President himself has been tipped to be the major contributor to the inaugural sessions.

Commanders of the Army and Air Force briefly had separate discussions with some of those nominated delegates during their stay at the venue as invitees to the occasion.

The sessions will end up on Friday (4) after the gathering would take a common stand and read an oath that would bring in a collective stance on the conference themes.

Quarter Master General's office at the Army Headquarters on the instructions of Major General Bimal Vidanage, Quarter Master General at the Army Headquarters took the lead in streamlining all arrangements in this regard.

A cultural spectacle, comprised of artistic features, presented by Army cultural troupes will add colour to the sessions during the conduct of seminar sessions.

Troops also supported the construction of a new sanitary complex and a new fence around the premises at the invitation of the organizers.

Similarly, an agricultural model farm, inclusive of crops free from poisonous substances, maintained by the Army troops is also on display at the 'Sadaham Sevana' premises.
