Army Shooters Win Championship with New Sri Lanka Record

Sri Lanka Army shooters beating veterans in 15 sports shooting clubs, including Navy, Air Force and the Police during the 6-day long National Shooting Sports Federation’s (NSSF) open firing meet, won 12 Gold medals, 12 Silver medals and 6 Bronze medals to carry away the overall Championship Trophy. 

The finals of the tournament took place on Sunday (20).   

By winning the overall Championship during this six-day long Championship Tournament, held at the Navy Firing Range in Welisara, the Army shooters made a record victory and created a new Sri Lanka record in air rifle shooting (male) event by securing 614. 06 points.

Veteran Army Shooter, Warrant Officer S. M. M. Samarakoon established this new record in the male air rifle shooting category. 

Here are the some of achievers:

1.    Corporal P.H.W Karunarathne - 3rd place in the (Single 60 prone firing position) 

2.     Corporal M.P Pathirana - 1st place in the Rapid Firing event and 2nd place in the Free pistol firing event

3.    Lance Corporal W.A.N.M. Weerakkody - 2nd place in the sport pistol firing event (Women’s category)  

4.    Major R.K.D.D.S Rathnayake - 2nd place in the Rapid Firing event 

5.    Warrant Officer II S.M.M Samarakoon - New Record in the Air Rifle Shooting (see above paragraphs) 

6.    Sergeant K.S.C.P Kendawela - 1st place in the Air Pistol event and 3rd place in the sport pistol firing event (women’s category) 

7.    Gunner W.G.V.K Wijerathne - 2nd place in the Air Pistol firing event

8.    Warrant Officer S. M. M Samarakoon   - 1st place in the 3x40 Rifle event

9.    Private W. A. J. R. Hemachandra - 1st place in the 10 m Air Rifle event and 3rd place in the 3x40 Rifle event 

10.    Private W. G. J. Madhushani - 2nd place in the 50 m Prone Firing Position (Women’s category

11.    Private A.I.D.A. Kulathunga  - 1st  Place in the   25m Sport Pistol Event

12.    Private    K.S.C.G. Kandawela   - 3rd place in the   25m Sport Pistol Event

13.    Corporal  M. P. Pathirana 2nd place in the 50m Free Pistol event
