Army Sergeant Produces Innovative Iron Bending Machine

A new innovative production that has been invented by an Army Sergeant at the Sri Lanka Army's Ordnance Factory at Dombagoda, Horana is able to save a fair share of expenditure to the country after having produced a new iron bending machine.

An iron bending machine if imported generally costs about Rs 18 lakhs but the Sergeant K.K.D.S.N Nadeeshan of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) under the supervision of Brigadier H.L Guruge, Commandant, Army Ordnance Factory, succeeded in producing the same machine at a cost of about Rs 30,000/= using steel left-overs in the factory.

With the assistance of the newly-invented machine, the Army was able to produce 80 x 100 couplings needed for erection of a new SLAOC building under construction at Ragama. The new machine which is capable of saving a lot of time too is able to complete the bending of 100 steel pipes of 19 ft long within a few hours.

The new invention, made up of more than 90% of scrap iron and left-overs in the factory would be able to conveniently bend 3/4", 1/2", 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2" and 2" diameter iron pipes.

Most essentials bought for invention of this special product included two jacks (5 t), chain wheels (8), chains (5), t-plates (21), iron wheels (4) and four razors.
