Army Retirees Begin Underwater Welding Course

The inaugural Underwater Welding Course, organized by the Ocean University of Sri Lanka (OCU), designed for Army personnel expecting to go on retirement after 22 years of service, got underway during a simple ceremony, held in late February at the OCU premises at Tangalle.

A total of 29 Army personnel, slated to retire from the Army, joined the 45 day-long course, following arrangements made by the Army’s Kalaoya Training School for Non-Commissioned Officers.

Sri Lanka Army in 2013 introduced this new scheme of training for Army personnel, expecting to retire since such training arrangements would find new employment openings during their retirement.

Those Army personnel participating in this Course will receive a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ 4) certificate which has been well recognized everywhere.

Professor Ranjith Senarathna, Chairperson, OCU and former Vice Chairman, University Grants Commission, Mr L.A.K Chandana Kumara, Deputy Director, OCU, Mr S.D Chandana, Mr K.P.G Ruwan Kithmina, Mr P.H Kithsiri, all lecturers in the OCU and Brigadier K.D.C.G.P Thilakarathna, Commandant, Non-Commissioned Officers’ Training School, were also present at the inaugural ceremony.
