Army-Renovated 20th Hindu Kovil under 100 Temple Renovation Project Vested with Devotees

Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) which has already launched a comprehensive scheme to renovate or repair a total of 100 Hindu temples in the Jaffna District, has so far attended to 20 of them with the complete renovation of the Thelippalai Muththumari Amman Hindu Temple that was vested with the devotees.

A special 'Pooja' (offering), attended by Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army at the Army-renovated Thelippalai Muththumari Amman Hindu Kovil, together with the catalyst behind the project, Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J), marked the occasion on Friday (30).

The renovation work of this temple, sponsored by Mr Parthy Kumaraswamy, a Hindu devotee and a philanthropist, resident in the UK was entrusted to the SFHQ-J a few months ago after expressing his full confidence in the capacity and professional expertise of the Army troops, subsequent to a meeting the donor has had with Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J).

The project for renovation of those religious places of worship began three months ago after careful observations confirmed that many of those temples are badly in need of such repairs and renovations after culmination of the humanitarian operations in the peninsula in May 2009. Since then, Army teams, attached to separate battalions in respective areas in the District have been carrying out those repairs in consultation with relevant temple trustees and Kurukkals (priests).

In many instances, the SFHQ-J has got various well-wishers to contribute to this ongoing project by way of providing paints, cement, sand, raw materials, etc, according to the SFHQ-J.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake who was in Jaffna in the previous week to attend several community-oriented projects, including the formal handover of the ‘Nallinakkapuram’ housing complex to Internally Displaced Persons, visited this completely-renovated Thelippalai Muththumari Amman Hindu Temple. The special Pooja at this renovated temple was also considered an offering to the deities to signify the reopening of this Army-renovated temple.
