Army to Raise Separate 'Educational Corps' Very Soon - Commander

“In the next three years, the Army is geared to bring all island-wide Army Training Institutes on par with international professional standards, enabling more and more foreign students to arrive here for military training. This is to be done with the raising of a separate Army Educational Corps with 100 instructors to match with varying foreign training streams as there is a growing demand for such openings here,” so said Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army Tuesday (30) morning, during an address, he made to the student officers at the Army’s newly-established Officer Career Development Centre (OCDC) at Buttala.

“The past three years after the successful completion of the war saw further improvements, being done on the quality of the Army infrastructure and associated auxiliary requirements, in order to promote professional standards of both officers and other ranks. This was done with founding training wings, like the OCDC, for example. By raising training standards, we will be able to save a considerable chunk of money going to foreign countries and simultaneously attract more and more foreign students here since our Army is second to none in the world. By establishing an Educational Corps within our Army during next three years, we will become fully professionally, attuned to multifarious capabilities, to be in line with any of the armies in the world,” the Commander remarked.

In his address, the Commander highlighted the importance of sustaining high standards in the professional conduct at all times and upgrading discipline since it is the discipline that mirrors the quality of a professional outfit and held in high esteem. He also did not forget to thank the Commandant, OCDC and academic staff for their excellent roles, achievements and performances in the training establishment within a short span of a year.

The OCDC saw its birth at Buttala about 11 months ago as a conceptual notion, mooted by the Commander himself during his tenure at Diyatalawa Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) as one of the former SLMA Commandants several years ago. It was opened in January, this year by HE the President’s Secretary Mr Lalith Weeratunge at the invitation of the Commander of the Army.

When the Commander served as the SLMA Commandant, he took steps to initiate the career training wing at Diyatalawa itself before a fully pledged one at Buttala was opened.

The most modern OCDC, now fully operational, holding different training courses for budding officers as well as state-sector officials, has earned a name for itself, owing to high standards of its academic formalities and professional nature and draws more than 300-400 tri-service officers per year, excluding those from the state sector on a regular basis.

During his stay at Buttala the Commander opened a new sand model room, generally used for instructive purposes at the Buttala complex.

Brigadier K. P. A Jayasekera, Commandant, OCDC received the Commander on arrival at the premises and presented a briefing to him on the scope of professional courses, being run by the institute.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, meanwhile, visited one more training wings, Diyatalawa Officers Study Centre on his way to the SLMA Tuesday (30) afternoon and met trainee students there. On Monday (29), the Commander opened the newly-built ten residential quarters building of the new Army Training Command (ARTRAC) at Diyatalawa during a simple ceremony at the invitation of Major General K. Herath, Commander ARTRAC.

The ARTRAC too, as a new innovative project of the Commander, himself, saw its establishment about a year ago to supervise overall training programmes of the Army.
