Army, Navy & Air Force Launch Massive Rescue & Relief Operation for Flood Victims

Nearly 300 Army troops and 13 rescue teams of Navy along with reconnaissance teams of the Air Force in a massive effort are currently engaged in immediate rescue and relief work in flood-affected Weeraketiya, Neluwa, Morawaka, Deiyandara, Padukka, Bulathsinhala, Kalawana, Wellampitiya, Palindanuwara and Beliatta areas as of Friday (26) morning in close coordination with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and District Secretariats in respective provinces.

As flood levels were fast rising due to torrential rains in the past 72 hours, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crisanthe De Silva instructed the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West), commanded by Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe to take stock of the worsening developments and deploy the troops for relief operations accordingly.

By Friday (26) morning, six BTR troop carriers of the Army with five officers and 80 soldiers on board have rushed to Bulathsinhala area after reports confirmed those hilly areas are very much prone to possible landslides or earth slips.

Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Forces - West, together with Brigadier Sumith Atapattu, General Officer Commanding, 58 Division is closely monitoring the situation and determined to send more and more troops for necessary rescue and relief work after troops were initially deployed.

Army troop deployments in some of the areas as of this morning (26) are as follows;

  • Weeraketiya - 21
  • Padukka - 22
  • Neluwa - 32
  • Bulathsinhala - 85
  • Morawaka - 21
  • Deiyandara - 16

Meanwhile, 13 Navy rescue teams are also conducting rescue and relief operations at Kalawana, Wellampitiya, Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, Padukka, Neluwa, Morawaka, Kamburupitiya and Beliatta areas while giving support to sister services and civilians.

Similarly, Sri Lanka Air Force after keeping four helicopters on standby has deployed one helicopter for reconnaissance duties in Neluwa area as at present.

Water levels of the Kaluganga and Ginganga are fast reaching flood levels according to the DMC and people living on the banks of those rivers as well as in vulnerable areas have been warned against possible landslides and disasters.
