Army Men’s & Women’s Teams Clinch Youth Services Rupavahini Volleyball Championship - 2016

Sri Lanka Army Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Teams emerged champions, beating Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Volleyball team and Sri Lanka Navy Women’s Volleyball team in the 30th Youth Services Rupavahini Volleyball Tournament held at the indoor stadium of the Youth Services Council in Maharagama on Sunday evening (11) and retained their Championship for the year 2016.

The final match of the men’s category played at National Youth Service Indoor Courts in Maharagama, which was a closely contested one was won by the Army in three sets to two. The Army Men’s team beat the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) team at the finals of the tournament. At the keenly fought finals, the Army players managed to prove their supremacy by beating the CEB players 25-20, 25-17,21-25,25-27 and 15-10 although the CEB to edge over the Army by winning the third set 21-25 and the fourth set 25-27.

While, Army Woman Volleyball players also secured the title in the 30th Youth Services Rupavahini Volleyball Tournament defeating Sri Lanka Navy Women’s Volleyball Team by three sets to one. Army woman players managed to dominate the day’s finals by beating the SLN woman players 20-25, 25-19, 25-21and 25-20.

Trophy for the Men and Women teams were awarded in addition to the cash prizes by the State Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs, Hon. Niroshan Perera, who graced the finals as the Chief Guest.

Both Men and Women players of Army teams also won several awards during the tournament. They included Best Setter, Best Serve, Best Hitter and Best Blocker. Men’s team was captained by Private W.D.S Fernando and the Coach was Mr W Sarath De Silva (National Coach) while Women’s team was captained by Lance Corporal P.P.D.T Shermila and the coach was Mr Nandana Ashoka.

Best player in the men’s category and women’s category also went to the Army claiming special prizes.

The Director General Army Sports, Major General Rohana Bandara, Vice President of Army Volleyball Association, Brigadier Davinda Perera and a large crowd including officers and soldiers from the Army and other services witnessed the match.

Women’s Championship

Best Player - Private Thilini Wasana Perera

Best Blocker - Private Ayesha Madurika

Best Serve - Private Aruni Wasanthi

Best Receiver - Private Thilini Wasana Perera
