Army Rugby players convincingly secured the Defence Services Trophy – 2018 and claimed victory against Navy counterparts during the finals in the Defence Services Rugby Tournament, held on Tuesday (27) at Air Force grounds in Ratmalana.
In the first half, Army players comfortably enhanced the lead, signalling what would follow in the end. Although Navy ruggerites gradually posed a stiff resistance to their rivals in a more determined manner, Army players gave a stiff resistance and defended the victory scoring 28-23. Several players in both teams appeared prominent, amid roars of applause and cheering. Finally, the exciting match gave the win to the Army Rugby team.
Meanwhile, woman Rugby players of the Army were also adjudged as the champions for the year 2018. Army woman players defeated Air Force and Navy teams during the preliminary matches.
During the first match of the Defence Services Trophy – 2018, Army players defeated Air Force and clinched the victory 29-21 at Welisara Navy Rugby grounds on Thursday (15).
Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, Chairman, Army Rugby Committee extended his warm greetings to the winners during the presentation ceremony and attended the event as the Chief Guest.
Senior tri-service Officers, a few other invitees and Rugby fans were associated with the prize-awarding ceremony.
Army Rugby players were placed in the 6th place out of 14 teams at the recently competed Inter-division League Rugby Championship.
